On time

TimeTime is the only true currency we have (the words ‘time’ and ‘spend’ are synonymous). It’s what separates those who are successful from those who aren’t. What we are today is the sum total of our life’s experiences. Who we are today is a result of what we have done with our time since birth or consciousness.

Growing up, our teachers would ask us “what will you be when you grow up?”. We’d give different answers. I met someone who said the answer should be “I don’t know what I will be, but I know what I want to be”. Interesting response. Is it possible to envision what you want to be and make it happen? I’d say yes, because some have been able to achieve that.

We often say we don’t know the future, but I say we can create our future. If our today is the sum total of our past decisions and what we have done with our time, it means our tomorrow ‘will be’ a creation of whatever it is we choose to do with our time from now on, every moment, every second.

I am 35, un-married, a Mechanical Engineer, an enthusiastic entrepreneur, a budding author. This time next year, if I have the opportunity to reflect on this write up, I’ll be 36 for sure, ………, ……….. The things I do with my time in the next 365 days will determine what will be in the gaps.

What do you do with your time? Have you come to the understanding that it’s whatever you do with your time now that determines what your future will be? Have you understood and embraced the concept of feeding your focus, managing your attractions and avoiding distractions?

Tips on how best to use your time: keep the company, only, of those who can add value to you and who you can add value to; read (a lot), but mostly read to learn; don’t spend much time in front of the TV; it rarely does add value to you.

  1. This is ‘dope’. As infants, we depend on our parents/guardians to determine what we do with our time. Breaking away from this reliance on people/society on what to spend our time on, is a challenge some adults have not overcome. There are no excuses; your destiny is the outcome of your decisions. Take ownership of your time and create the future you so desire.

    1. You are absolutely right. There are no excuses. We are who we are because of what we do. Everyday, we ‘choose’ who we become. So, we can either do it consciously by spending our time to work our plans, or we can wait for life to happen to us. The choice is always ours to make. Thanks!

  2. Actually, the TV can add a lot of value to you depending on what program you watch. But like you said decide what you want to be. With this at the back of your mind design your tv time to suit what you what to be in the next 365 days.

Keeping the right company is paramount. Iron sharpeneth iron the Bible says.

    1. Yes, the TV does add value when we watch to seek information. So long as we are not watching because there is nothing to do …… because we find ourselves doing that a lot. There’s so much to do in this world, so much to be achieved. I sometimes wonder why some say they are bored! Thanks for the feedback and comment!

  3. On point. Two of the major thieves of time are procrastination and distraction. Making conscious efforts to avoid these duo will go a Long way in Making every second of this universal but divine gift of time Count.
